Event Details

A tutored cider tasting from expert, Mike Pomranz.

This event is part of the Sheffield CAMRA Steel City Beer Festival 2022 (SCBF46).

You will be:

  • introduced to four ciders which are available at the festival.
  • provided with 1/3 pint of each cider, plus water and water biscuits.

We plan to use the four ciders, listed below.

Dorset Nectar, (Dorset) Dabinett 5.5% Ventons, (Devon) Sweet Maid in Devon 6.0% Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry, (Broome Farm, Ross-on-Wye) Flakey Bark S.V.P. 2020 6.4% Exemption Ciderhouse, (The Cider Hole, Sheffield) Steel City Spontaneous Speed Run 5.8%

Please note, it may be necessary to substitute one of the ciders by a different drink of a similar style.

Mike Pomranz has been writing about beer professionally since 2006, appearing in a wide array of publications including Time, People, Travel + Leisure, VinePair, and Playboy. He joined the staff of Food & Wine Magazine in 2014 and soon expanded into covering cider. He first experimented with making cider in 2015 and became a Certified Cider Professional in 2017.

In 2016, Mike moved from Brooklyn, New York, to Sheffield where he continued his interest in cidermaking, focusing on using locally-collected Sheffield garden apples. In 2020, he launched Quality Ferments and began importing cider and other alcoholic beverages from around the world. Then, in September 2021, he opened The Cider Hole - an urban microcidery, bar, and bottle shop - where he makes and serves his own Exemption Ciderhouse cider along with over 60 other hand-selected canned and bottled ciders, craft beer and natural wine. In June, Mike organised the first Sheffield Craft Cider Festival.

Appreciating Real Cidermaking will occur on Friday afternoon at 15:00.

The event will take place in the Power Room: over the bridge from the Main Hall, then turn left.
