Event Details

This event is part of the Sheffield CAMRA Steel City Beer Festival 2024 (SCBF48).

A tutored beer tasting and discussion led by experts from the oldest established brewery in Sheffield. This event will explore the depth and breadth of the Abbeydale range.

This tasting will be led by Lead Brewer, Jim Rangeley and Marketing Manager, Laura Rangeley. Jim was recently awarded, Brewer of the Year at the 2024 Brewers Choice Awards.

Established in 1996, last year (2023) Abbeydale produced over 200 Bbl./week of which over 75% was cask. They produce at least one new beer each week, including both the Funk Dungeon and Dr.Morton’s brands. The latter is a tribute to the owners with the former highlighting their barrel ageing project.

You will be introduced to five beers, each in a 1/3 pint measure:

  • three cask: Trust (4.7%) pale ale (VG & GF) Black Mass (6.66%) Black IPA (VG & GF) Through the Hopback Lemondrop (4.0%) single hopped pale ale (GF)

  • one key-keg - either: Astronaut (5.2%) or the Nelson Sauvin hopped collaboration with Utopian Brewery (5.2%)

  • one bottled beer from the Abbeydale Funk Dungeon collection: Blood Orange Sour (abv 6.0%).

  • the latter is from a limited release of only 100 bottles: a collaboration made with Sicilian Moro blood oranges left over from the production of Locksley Distilling citrus liqueur. Abbeydale have added the flesh of the fruit (around 150g/l) directly into the barrel with a simple sour base beer, hopped with UK grown Opus hops. Sour, light and refreshing.

The selected beers provide a variety of both beer styles and a range of strengths.

This event will take place in the Power Room: over the bridge from the Main Hall, then turn left.

This tutored tasting is part of the 2024 Sheffield Steel City Beer Festival. There is an extra charge of £7.00 per person.

You will need to enter the Beer Festival in advance of the tasting. This entry will incur the normal Beer Festival admission fee:

  • non-CAMRA members: £17.00 - CAMRA members: £15.00 (entry includes £10.00 beer tokens and £3.00 glass deposit)
