A walk of approximately 1.5 miles exploring Sheffield's Little Chicago Quarter in 1925 is followed by a visit to the 47th annual Sheffield Steel City Beeer Festival. We will explore the social and Industrial heritage of the area, examining the myths and reality of a tumultuous year in Sheffield's history. We will finish at Kelham Island Museum, at the Beer Festival, before the final comments.
The short walk will explore streets that feature in the walk leader’s book ‘Sheffield 1925: Gang Wars and Wembley Glory’, with a narrative explaining how Sheffield briefly became the most turbulent city in Britain because of an escalating gang war involving the Park Brigade, Mooney Gang, Gas Tank Gang and many others.
Starting on Scotland Street with stories of West Bar as Sheffield’s Little Piccadilly, Charlie Peace and social migration from Sheffield's rural fringe, Ireland, and Italy, we will then consider housing and social conditions in Victorian Sheffield. The walk will then examine three specific incidents, a decisive confrontation on Corporation Street, a shoot-out on Furnace Hill and a murder mystery. It will look at how robust methods and innovative technology were deployed by the police to resolve the crisis. The comfortable walk, with just one minor ascent, will last for approximately 90 minutes followed by post-walk drink and discussion. There will also be the opportunity to purchase copies of ‘Sheffield 1925: gang wars and Wembley Glory.’
We will conclude at Kelham Island Museum, at the 47th Sheffield Steel City Beer Festival (SCBF47).
